6. Bob Reed Memorial School House- County Farm One-room School House

Our school building was known as the County Farm School, having served the Loganville area near the former County Poor Farm. The first school building at that site was built around 1865. School was held consistently from that time, except for the war years of 1940-1943 when only one student lived in the area. It stood on the Vogel property near the Sauk County Health Care Center.

Small schools like this one operated until 1962 when schools were consolidated and children were bussed to larger schools in towns. It contains many photos of the one room schools of the area and the students who attended, items donated by school teachers, and many original school books. Teachers of the one room schools had to be everything to everyone – artist, nurse, teacher, music leader, and lesson writer. Examples of school life are exhibited, from the water cooler crock to posters, presidential pictures, and a 48 star flag. The school bell in front of the building marked the beginning and end of the day. During WWI and WWII, many schoolhouses featured Victory Gardens, tended by the students as part of their lessons about the war at hand, the needs of the armies, and how to provide food for their families, as well as food for their lunches.
